Ade and Abu sneak out of Sunday school to go for a swim. When they are chased away from the water, they try a more adult liquid: their first sips of alcohol, as Ade sees his father do. The mischief will be discovered.
In a small village in India, an ordinary sunday unravels the life of Ade, an 8-year-old boy facing the misery of his daily life and his father’s alcohol addiction. Ade seems to have been forced to mature prematurely. He finds refuge in activities that are forbidden at his age, such as skipping sunday school to share cigarettes and beer with a friend. This sensitive and moving portrait leads us to reflect on the complexities of childhood in adversity, exploring the boundaries between lost innocence and the search for escapism. (Jéssica Pestana)
