Being in a Place – A Portrait of Margaret Tait

Luke Fowler

United Kingdom
2022, 61'

COMPETITION Margaret Tait’s life revolved around cinema and poetry. In this documentary, Luke Fowler takes a vast collection of archival material and unpublished and undiscovered correspondence and notebooks to weave together an image of and an original tribute to the Scottish director and poet, blending their sensibilities.

More than a portrait of the Scottish filmmaker Margaret Tait (1918-1999) Being in a place is a convergence of Tait’s and Fowler’s sensibility as well as a confirmation and enactment of the filmmakers’ shared idea of the poetic possibilities of film in relation to the real.

To portray someone is also to portray the place where that person exists, a kind of understanding that a person’s sensibility inhabits and is indexical both in the place that surrounds them and in the material or immaterial objects, human and non-human, with which they interact and leave as a trace.

Tait’s frustrated film project is activated by Fowler through textual, sound and filmic archives, as well as through tours of Orkney, the location of the project and the place where the filmmaker lived and died. In the filmic alchemy Tait and her film come to life, while Fowler’s cinema reaches its highest point. (Vanja Milena)
