OUT OF COMPETITION Jon starts out as a baby, alone on a stormy night. Then he’s a foster child, and then someone who commits a crime after being attacked. Jon eventually meets a prison guard and they become a couple. This story, an adaptation of the Oedipus myth, has a beginning and an end that touch.

Like a Greek tragedy whispered in one’s ear, MUSIC gradually composes itself and takes hold of the body of those who listen. This free adaptation of Sophocles’ OEDIPUS REX is built from absolutely fascinating contours, colors, spaces, and bodies. The German director Angela Schanelec returns to IndieLisboa with an inventive proposal not only of the often-staged tragedy but of the very cinematographic staging itself. Through an accumulation of gestures, faces, feet, and landscapes, a post-Bressonian mise-en-scène becomes contradictorily free and fluid. Freed from narrative constraints by the extremely well-known story, Schanelec masterfully explores the formal aspects and their affections in a sensory game, using music as the score of suffering and liberation.
