OUT OF COMPETITION Jon starts out as a baby, alone on a stormy night. Then he’s a foster child, and then someone who commits a crime after being attacked. Jon eventually meets a prison guard and they become a couple. This story, an adaptation of the Oedipus myth, has a beginning and an end that touch.

Like a Greek tragedy whispered in one’s ear, MUSIC gradually composes itself and takes hold of the body of those who listen. This free adaptation of Sophocles’ OEDIPUS REX is built from absolutely fascinating contours, colors, spaces, and bodies. The German director Angela Schanelec returns to IndieLisboa with an inventive proposal not only of the often-staged tragedy but of the very cinematographic staging itself. Through an accumulation of gestures, faces, feet, and landscapes, a post-Bressonian mise-en-scène becomes contradictorily free and fluid. Freed from narrative constraints by the extremely well-known story, Schanelec masterfully explores the formal aspects and their affections in a sensory game, using music as the score of suffering and liberation. Here, the camera travels through five hospitals, in Paris, and the work of surgeries and autopsies that take place there, in an immersive and sensory tour of our literal and vulnerable core, in an expressionist abstraction.

COMPETITION Stefan is a Romanian construction worker living in Brussels and preparing for a four-week vacation that, he warns friends and family, could take longer. With the fridge emptied and the tiredness of sleepless nights, he ends up crossing paths with Shuxiu, a young woman who works in a small restaurant while getting a PhD focused on moss ecosystems. And that’s how two people who could miss each other in the world find themselves united by happenstance.
