Romain is a young adult who goes to his usual friend to try something new. On a drive home laced with cocaine and something else, the music blares and the euphoric feeling is interrupted when someone who shouldn’t be on the road gets in the car. What follows is a descent into a, shall we say, zombie apocalypse in a movie that employs the one-shot with a sure and fearless hand. MadS has an uncanny aesthetic sense that harmonizes with the exquisite tension it builds. It makes sense that the last night is the maddest.

Makamisa: Phantasm of Revenge

A film that’s a hallucinated (and hallucinating) journey through the literary world of José Rizal (a Filipino nationalist writer and revolutionary during the Spanish colonial period), which reconfigures and plays with the colonial history of his country. The gesture is surreal and based on allegorical characters: the poet, the priest and the madwoman. The film is silent, using the out-of-date 35mm reels as a canvas that was painted on. A suis generis movie and a delicious delirium.

Maya, Give Me a Title

Michel Gondry (known for films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) directed this movie that combines paper cut-out animation and stop-motion, mixing a bit of live-action sequences in the non-animated world. Gondry likes creative ideas and that’s exactly what happens here: to maintain communication with his daughter, Maya, who lives on another continent, he makes films from ideas she suggests, in an incredibly inventive process.

Memoirs of Teatro da Cornucópia

A renowned emblem of Portuguese interventionist theater, the Cornucópia tear appeared in fascist obscurity to combat the dictatorship on stage. Among the classics, a project is born and dies, but one face remains iconic: Luís Miguel Cintra, who shared his art with the permanent complicity of a filmmaker, Solveig Nordlund. Together, they organize their drawers, guided by images, traces and testimonies of the protagonists who survived this History.

Director Elegance Bratton places Vince Lawrence, a DJ and pioneering producer, as the anchor figure in this film that examines the birth and evolution of house music, which emerged on the heels of disco in South Side Chicago. The film focuses on Lawrence’s origins and the impact of the “Disco Demolition Night” (an event promoted by broadcaster Steve Dahl against disco music, repudiated by rock fans), a riot that exposed the racist and homophobic veins that inspired the initial rejection of disco, as well as its successor, house music.
