It’s the classic porn trope: the pizza boy brings a pizza, the woman has no money to pay for it and, together, they come to an agreement. But this movie imagines the situation through the prism of Marxism and takes this to its ultimate consequences. Notions of currency or market value have never been so sexy.
A woman orders a pizza but, when it’s time to pay, she cheerfully announces that she doesn’t have enough money, and proposes an unusual solution to the delivery guy—one straight out of an adult film. The red-dot aesthetic of Make Me a Pizza is, from the outset, an entire statement. But when the offer seems too good to be true, suspicion kicks in, and the delivery man thoughtfully reflects on the production cost of a large meat lover’s pie—a meal, and a value chain, after all. Can the exchange value be measured by anything other than cold hard cash? Blending parody with workers’ rights, Make Me a Pizza shows how everything boils down to a commercial transaction, if even an innocent pizza can become an eloquent allegory for the increasingly impersonal exchanges of consumer society. In a joint effort, the unlikely couple tries to break away from that logic and, in a symbolic twist, decides to become the pizza themselves (you have to see it to believe it), turning into objects of desire for one another. Junk food served on a motorbike, all to the taste of macho porn: the lust we’re entitled to in the “late stage.” We already are eating from the trash can all the time, says the philosopher.
