Shrooms

Shrooms’ starting point is a scientific study in which the psilocybin of magic mushrooms is used for the therapeutic treatment of depression. Using the premise of this study, Shrooms follows Dan, a young Venezuelan man currently living in Lisbon, who collects magic mushrooms in the forest and distributes them in the city to those in need of help – like a New Age Robin Hood – using pigeons as carriers.

A delicate and comic series of misunderstandings in which characters — Kai and her broken heart, Fu Ang and his ambitions beyond the umbrella shop, and Xiao Xin in a luxury tower living temporarily as an emigrant — meet and lose sight of each other. The film presents its narrative non-linearly, as if it were a collection of fragmented postcards, in which the characters’ compass points to Recife.

Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat

An ingenious exploration of the impact of American jazz figures of the time on a perhaps little-known historical episode of the Cold War, the coup d’état that involved the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, independence leader and first democratically elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A portrait that weaves a tapestry that unites historical personalities (from Khrushchev to Eisenhower) with unavoidable names in music such as Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie or Miriam Makeba.

Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf, by the extremely prolific and proficient Yerzhanov, has several sources of inspiration: John Ford, samurai stories and Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same name, as well as Kazakh folklore. The film follows two characters who reluctantly team up with one goal: to find a child who has been kidnapped. The settings are desolate though beautiful, the violence brutal and the film virtuously constructed, with characters as intense as they are striking.

The Beast
