The Best of All Worlds

Lisbon, 2027. Marta and Miguel are both researchers that are part of a scientific group and a couple in their private lives. Their relationship will be put to the test on one decisive night when the parameters that Marta is analyzing point to the very high probability of a major earthquake hitting Lisbon. The group splits, debating whether or not to warn the population of the possible impending tragedy.

There is a general consensus in the scientific community that a major earthquake will happen again in Lisbon. The question is not so much whether it will happen, but when. Rita Nunes suggests that this could happen as early as 2027. In the not-too-distant future, a group of scientists, led by a confident and convinced Sara Barros Leitão, are faced with the possibility of being able to predict the unpredictable. Data from new submarine cables installed in 2025, a real fact on which the film is based, indicates the likelihood of an imminent earthquake. The group is torn between the possibility of saving many lives or creating unjustified widespread panic, which could be even more catastrophic. But even before this earthquake shakes the city of Lisbon, it has already shattered personal convictions and ruined intimate relationships. -Carlos Ramos
