The Human Surge 3

Watching this film, you have to wonder if what you’re seeing is really the pinnacle of being human, and if it is, despite the cheeky wink, you have to think twice about what you want to do when you leave the theater. We are shown people — living in a reality that is almost-the-same-as-ours — trying to pass the time, together, by telling discouraging stories about their work. Filmed with a 360-degree camera and adapted for the cinema, the restlessness emanates from this film.

The Missing

The animation in this film results in a touching metaphor about trauma, both physical and emotional, and reconciliation. Eric is an animation artist who literally has no mouth, so he communicates through a frame around his neck. Too introverted to confess his feelings to his co-worker, he lives in isolation, despite his mother’s attempts to bring him closer to the outside world. Until the day she asks him to visit his uncle Rogelio.

The Navigator

Directed by and starring Buster Keaton, this film is a comedy about Rollo Treadway’s mistaken voyage on a ship sold to a warring country. Initially intending a honeymoon cruise, Rollo boards the wrong ship when his proposal to neighbour Betsy O’Brien is rejected.  The ship belonged to Betsy’s father’s and she comes looking for him. The Royal Hotel

Two friends escape their problems by going on a party cruise. When they disembark in Australia, the lack of funds to continue travelling leads to the need for temporary work. Tension grows between the outsiders and the locals.
