Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and producer Joseph Patel had already teamed up for the documentary Summer of Soul — a film that played at IndieLisboa and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2022 — and now they’re back with another story rooted in African-American culture. This time, the subject of their gaze is the blazing star that was Sly Stone in the 1960s and 1970s, who later saw his career fall into obscurity. The film goes beyond this musical legend to explore the particular difficulties faced by black artists.

In Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, someone tells an actor that 100 years from now he will come back to life whenever a reel of his work is projected. In this film, countless actors from all over the world come back to life, creating a cast of angels and ghosts. The film has a single 35mm print, incorporating natural wear and tear in each viewing, until it erodes definitively.

One of the Coen brothers’ classics, a movie about a “Dude” (Jeff Bridges) who just wants to relax and bowl. However, he is mistaken for a millionaire with the same surname and begins an adventure that will take him too far — not least because, in all honesty, he just wanted his rug back. The Bright and Dark Side of Things

In this film, Binka Jeliaskova returns to the universe of The Last Word (Poslednata Duma) for an incisive look at the prison system, now in a period far removed from the Second World War, in the middle of the Cold War, filmed before the fall of the Soviet regime. In The Bright and Dark Side of Things (Lice I Opuko), poverty is the motto for stories where you have to steal to survive, where violence is domestic and where children can be a saleable commodity.

With this film, he makes his directorial debut and brings us an intimate and family portrait of the talented flamenco guitar player Yerai Cortés. A documentary that serves as a cathartic revisitation through music.

The Last Word

The Last Word (Poslednata Duma) is a non-linear film that blends the past and present of a group of six women who are sentenced to death for their anti-fascist political struggle. One of the only films by Binka Jeliaskova to premiere in Portugal, in the summer of 1975 after a run in the Cannes Official Competition, it was also her most internationally recognized.
