Antón Álvarez is C. Tangana, a Spanish musician and rapper who has become a global phenomenon (the film Esta ambición desmedida, about his latest album, was shown at IndieLisboa last year). With this film, he makes his directorial debut and brings us an intimate and family portrait of the talented flamenco guitar player Yerai Cortés. A documentary that serves as a cathartic revisitation through music.
Antón Álvarez, known by his nom de plume C. Tangana, manages with a fearless and sure hand, especially given the fact that this is his first feature film, to tell us not only this intriguing story, which brings together family sorrows, stormy loves and gypsy culture, but also to infect us with his enthusiasm and fascination with the palpable talent of Yerai Cortés, but also with her incredible life story. Álvarez underlines notions of fate and destiny, building a moving story within the genre of the music documentary. The film is populated, inevitably and fortunately, by performances that flow along the spectrum from the most classical to the most contemporary.
