It was on a trip. The plane didn’t stop at the airport of that country, it was in another one. That country wasn’t on the map. But, if we passed through checkpoints and walls and other borders, we would get there. To a part of a country that had been whole in times past. He said, write everything down now, don’t wait. Write while it’s still hot. And I wrote.

Teatro do Vestido is a theatrical collective founded in 2001, and its first play, “Tua,” premiered at the Galeria Zé dos Bois. At its core, it focuses on the writing of original dramatic texts, the search for alternative presentation spaces, the observation of reality, ethnographic research, and oral history as its main working methodologies. The company constantly seeks new ways to create autobiographical, political, engaged, and poetic theater through collaborative processes, under the artistic direction of Joana Craveiro. Since its formation in 2001, ethical, social, and pedagogical dimensions have been integral to the company and have been expressed in the multiple projects developed over its more than 20 years of activity. The company has always worked on the theme of memory and its relationship with society and the life of each individual, making its theater a blend of autobiography and profound reflection on the surrounding reality. The company has been attempting to redefine the practice of political and documentary theater today. The poetics of cities, vacant spaces, transitional spaces, and spaces in transformation; careful and engaged observation of everyday life; fieldwork, collection of memories and life stories; historical memory, and the creation of various communities as the company passes through—all these aspects are the methodological and artistic hallmark of the work of the Theater of the Dress. Recognizing this, the Portuguese Association of Theater Critics described Teatro do Vestido in 2012 as having “an activity open to all forms of art, attentive to all citizens, and curious about everything that happens in the world in which people live.”

Teatro do Vestido has the support of República Portuguesa -Cultura | DGARTES during 2023-2024.
