Fado Bicha

Fado Bicha is a musical, performative, and activist project created in Lisbon in 2017 by Lila Fadista, on vocals and lyrics, and João Caçador, on composition and instruments. Using fado as their main tool, Lila and João propose a free exploration of this heritage, pushing beyond some of the rigid boundaries of traditional fado, particularly the gender normativity and the erasure of the contributions and experiences of LGBTI people. They also challenge the musical doctrine of what constitutes fado, stretching the boundaries of its domain both musically and lyrically.

The project is one of intervention, stemming from Lila and João’s queer identities and their involvement in activist circles and critical reflections on Portuguese history and identity. They claim legitimacy based on the mutable nature of fado (like any artistic expression) and the suppressed queer ancestry—both in fado and Portuguese society in general.

With more than 250 concerts in ten different countries, several singles, and the campaign song for Joacine Katar Moreira in 2019, Fado Bicha has also participated in theater, cinema, and television (both acting and composing soundtracks). In 2022, they participated in the Festival da Canção with the song “Povo Pequenino” and released their debut album “OCUPAÇÃO” a few months later, produced by Luís Clara Gomes (Moullinex), which appeared on several lists of the best Portuguese albums of the year, including a #4 spot on Blitz’s list.

Since 2022, Fado Bicha performs as a trio with the addition of LARIE, a queer multi-instrumentalist from Brazil, for their live concerts.
