“Together Forever”. Refuse Room is a film by Simon Liu, who returns with an exploration of what it means to live in the city of Hong Kong, in a struggle between the vertical and the horizontal, from the endless buildings to the detritus of the population.
Hong Kong revealed in the details of everyday objects, present and forgotten, vibrant lights, colours and fragments of graffiti messages on the walls. The film’s breakneck pace mirrors the dynamics of a metropolis in constant acceleration. Simon Liu returns to IndieLisboa to honour his territory with intimate precision, revealing a city that pulses beyond its skyline of skyscrapers. In every almost abstract detail, subliminal inscriptions emerge, criticising and applauding that place which is so special, so penetrating. We can almost feel the heat, the humidity in the distorted vocalisations of a resistant Cantonese language. The frenetic editing alternates short shots and contemplative moments that invite the viewer to unveil the chaotic and poetic soul of the city in the shallow flight of a butterfly and the steady gaze of a cat. This is no ordinary place, this is no ordinary waste, this is Hong Kong and you can feel the film on your skin. (Margarida Moz)
