Between the Sea and the Island is a search, an autobiographical archaeology, an essay on the relationship between an island son and his father and the sea. And there are endless layers, thoughts and memories in this space-time “between” this sea and this island.
Between the Sea and the Island, by José Rodrigo Freitas, is an intimate and poetic short film that explores the relationship between a son and his father, shaped by distance, the sea, and memory. Blending past and present, the film follows the director’s search for traces of his father a fisherman often absent from the island but deeply connected to the sea. The boat built by the father, once their meeting point at sea, becomes a symbol of connection and absence, now sailing through an almost imaginary space between land and water.
