When her boyfriend’s constant complaints (tinged with narcissism that makes her feel invisible) leave her bursting with anger, Laura has to dosomething to get out of this situation where even the landscape is bleak.
As I watch and re-watch this new work by the French director Tohé Commaret, a strange anguish overtakes me as I enter Laura’s fragile world. Everything seems adrift: the protagonist herself, the gazes – and the absence of them – the tracking shots, the unanswered calls, and even the faded shades of blue. The buildings around her seem to crumble, while her nails, perfectly made, appear ready to break. A strange coming-of-age, this disturbing work invites us to witness a rupture that resembles the end of the world, only to later reveal a sigh in its stunning microscopic shots of an ant in a garden.
