Nothing spoils a romantic dinner like unexplained transformations in the face of one of the members of the couple. But that doesn’t mean that the romance is extinguished. Sometimes you just need a change of wig.

Carolina Sandvik uses the stop motion animation technique for a deadpan exploration, as existential as it is amusing, of what happens when you mix horror and romance, the decomposition of the body and the mundane life of a couple. Here, the growing bodily transformations are a clear but exquisite metaphor for a relationship falling apart. Yet, Sandvik’s gaze is always humorous, punctuating the growing poignancy of the story. Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil revolves around the remarkable performance by David Dastmalchian (a frequent James Gunn collaborator) as host of the talk show Night Owls with Jack Delroy. The film is presented along the lines of classic vintage found footage joint: a lost recording of a 1977 Halloween episode, where the interviewees are a parapsychologist and a girl who appears to be the only survivor of a mass suicide in a satanic church.

Rotting in the Sun

A totally sarcastic movie that is not without its incredibly moving moments. Told in a manner reminiscent of a mockumentary, without actually being one, Rotting in the Sun starts by being about a director with suicidal ideations, a tendency to take ketamine and an encounter that can be both amorous and careerist with Instagram personality Jordan Firstman. But everything takes a turn and a sofa is to blame.

Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf, by the extremely prolific and proficient Yerzhanov, has several sources of inspiration: John Ford, samurai stories and Hermann Hesse’s novel of the same name, as well as Kazakh folklore. The film follows two characters who reluctantly team up with one goal: to find a child who has been kidnapped. The settings are desolate though beautiful, the violence brutal and the film virtuously constructed, with characters as intense as they are striking.

Tension grows between the outsiders and the locals.

He is taken in by a family who are waiting for a father they fear dead, until a figure shrouded in death appears, claiming to be the long-awaited patriarch. The myth of a vampire figure emerges and is realised within this family, where our unsuspecting Marquis d’Urfé is found. Artifice and theatricality are the threads that sew together this fascinating adaptation of the vampire’s folkloric cousin, the Balkan vourdalak.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula set in a French neighborhood with a pre-adolescent girl is, perhaps, a simple idea, but the atmosphere created by Rodrigue Huart and the final crescendo gives the film a touch that is as surprising as it is shocking, and a little naughty.
