Insects

Jan Švankmajer thought that this would be his last film. An adaptation of a satirical theater comedy by brothers Karel and Josef Čapek, it follows a drifter narrator who falls asleep in a forest and dreams of anthropomorphized insects, in an allegory of life after the First World War. Švankmajer’s adaptation is a metatextual narrative about an amateur staging of the play, blended with the process of making the film itself.

It is Night in America

The film’s premise is described in a newspaper headline: are animals invading our cities or just reclaiming their natural habitat? The blue color and the grain of the 16mm give texture to a narrative of displacement and violence that gives space to the perspective of the animals that inhabit Brasília — sometimes in captivity, sometimes roaming the city — who observe us as much as we do them.

In the mid-1960s, on the Côte d’Azur, specifically in Hyères, the International Festival du jeune cinéma takes place. The festival ended in the early 1980s and its history is now told through archive footage that shows the directors who passed through (from Akerman to Carax), the press, the chaotic audience. A portrait of a festival and of a cinephile culture. One of the directors was the Portuguese Rui Nogueira, who will be present at the second screening of the film.
