Le Mali 70

A big band from Berlin, the Omniversal Earkestra project, discovers records by big bands from the Republic of Mali from the 1960s and 70s, when there was an explosive music scene right after the country’s independence. Fascinated by the sound — which combines Dogon, Wassalou or Tuareg traditions with Cuban influences — they embark on a journey to meet the veteran legends who originated the movement, such as Cheick Tidiane Seck, Abdoulaye Diabaté or Salif Keita.

Little Otik

Jan Švankmajer’s affection for fairy-tale characters of macabre tones is present in this adaptation of a Czech folklore story, between Pinocchio and the Little Red Riding Hood, about a couple desiring to have a baby who find an anthropomorphic trunk that turns out to possess an insatiable hunger. The consequences turn out to be eccentric, yet still (very darkly) humorous.

“Mannvirki” means structure, building. But also the junction of the words for “person” and “fortress”. In this film, we travel through an abandoned structure in northern Iceland, which due to its proximity to the coast is being eroded by time, wind, and sea. The lack of activity is an invitation to the entry of fauna, flora and curious humans with plans for the future.

Miúcha, the Voice of Bossa Nova

Miúcha is a singer that breaks free, in this documentary, from the descriptions that reduce her to being the sister of Chico Buarque, wife of João Gilberto and collaborator of Vinicius de Moraes or Tom Jobim. Her contributions to the bossa nova movement are deepened and we follow how she navigated her marriage and tried to define her career. The film relies on personal archives that include photographs, letters, watercolors and audio recordings.
