KINDS OF KINDNESS is a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

La Chimera

Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil revolves around the remarkable performance by David Dastmalchian (a frequent James Gunn collaborator) as host of the talk show Night Owls with Jack Delroy. The film is presented along the lines of classic vintage found footage joint: a lost recording of a 1977 Halloween episode, where the interviewees are a parapsychologist and a girl who appears to be the only survivor of a mass suicide in a satanic church.

Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero

Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) rose to stardom with “Old Town Road”, a single mixing rap and country that topped the Billboard charts in the United States for 19 weeks. This was followed by his public honesty about his homosexuality, numerous awards and status as a figure in the LGBTQI+ community. In this documentary, he talks in the first person about his journey, success and current moment — chronicling his 2022 tour.

Louder Than You Think

Pavement, fronted by Stephen Malkmus, are one of the most influential indie bands to come out of the American underground in the 90s. But this bittersweet documentary focuses on the story of Gary Young, the hippie drummer at whose house the band started recording their initial songs. Young — an unpredictable force on stage, always running or doing a headstand — ended up leaving the band after the Slanted and Enchanted tour, but his legacy is still felt.

Malqueridas

A film that focuses on a community that lives one of the most invisible existences to society: those of women in prison, here in Chile. In a daring move, the images we see were captured clandestinely using mobile phones, a forbidden object. Between poverty and longing, what is transmitted and transcends the walls that surround the women is the love for their distant children and the strength of the bonds that are created in confinement.

Mama Africa

Miriam Makeba, the voice of the (still) famous song “Pata Pata”, is a figure that’s not only historic for her music. She is also a name that has become intertwined with South African politics, having become a civil rights activist and a powerful voice against the end of apartheid. Seen here in all its guises, especially when travelling the world spreading a political message for an end to racism and poverty on the African continent.

Cameroonian Mambar Pierrette is a mother of three and a seamstress, but things aren’t easy. With a husband who doesn’t help with expenses, a machine that has to be repaired and customers who haggle over the price of the clothes she creates, the adversities keep piling up — it’s no wonder that when she receives a paycheck, she says she’s receiving oxygen. But despite everything, she will have to show the real strength of her resilience when tragedy strikes.

Monisme

This movie is a portrait of an ecosystem, which gives us the only clue we need in the name: monism is the doctrine according to which all things that exist are part of a whole. That unifying point may be God, but here it’s a volcano. We are on the fiery Mount Merapi. Close to recent eruptions, a story is being rehearsed that unites different cinematographic registers and a community that has the volcano as its link. A film that may be emotionally challenging.
