Those last days of summer break, a window about to close — don’t go, Summer. Outside, charcoal strikes the first notes of the barbecue. Balthazar’s cousins are getting ready for the big night, while his older brother pretends he doesn’t exist. That leaves Tom, the one he texts with — the only one who doesn’t remind him that he is thirteen.

Paper Trail

A life told through scraps of paper, in just 14 minutes. The new film by don hertzfeldt — the American filmmaker nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film with World of Tomorrow (2016), which also screened at IndieLisboa — is a frenetic exercise, darting between the concrete and the abstract, between colored pencil and blue ballpoint pen, and bursting with inventive energy.
