Zizi (or Praying to a Fabulous Tree)

Felipe M. Bragança

Brazil
2025, 30'

A movie that combines fiction and reality to tell the story of an Indigenous woman, the director’s grandmother, and the tree she planted, whose fruit is the jackfruit — and both are seen in the same way, as something undesirable.

To return and to confront the corners of our childhood. Felipe M. Bragança comes back to Indie with a short filmed in the backyard of his grandmother’s in Queimados, Rio’s suburbs. As he describes, the film works like a prayer — not only for her but also for the jackfruit tree that shaped his youth. With unique representations and origins, Jaca and Zizi are now ghostly figures, blurring the notion of a family tree and dissolving the boundaries between ancestry and imagination. By intertwining memories, spirituality, and fable, Felipe creates a universe where the past reinvents itself and the invisible manifests. And between shadows and lights filtered through the garden trees, we are confronted with an intimate and mystical Brazil, where the land, the tree, and the family spirits become one body.
