Weird To Be Human

We already knew it would come to this: in 2194, bodies bearing a human likeness are cultivated to host artificial intelligences. Transfers between the digital and physical realms have become daily routine. An immigration officer from the Department of Embodiments arrives to interrogate a being on the verge of transformation.

Set in a future in 2194, the transfiguration between the digital and physical worlds has become a common practice, and artificial intelligences can now inhabit lab-grown bodies designed in the image of humans. In this context, an agent from a department responsible for these transitions enters a facility to interrogate an entity that is about to complete its process of embodiment.
Weird to Be Human, by Jan Grabowski, builds its narrative around this encounter, exploring the tension between an entity in transformation and an institutional structure that regulates and validates the process. The aseptic, minimalist setting reinforces a sense of control and distance, contrasting with the entity’s vulnerability and curiosity.
This confrontation serves as a reflection on the criteria that define what it means to be human. More than a question of the body, the film suggests that humanity may be tied to consciousness, sensitivity, or even recognition by social systems. At the same time, it highlights how these definitions are shaped by bureaucratic structures that seek to classify and constrain what escapes the normative.
In this way, Weird to Be Human presents itself as a visual and conceptual essay on identity and empathy, questioning to what extent being human is a natural condition or a construction shaped by rules and conventions. (Jéssica Pestana)
