A good son returns home. Robbie comes back to his small town in rural New Jersey, where his mother still mourns the sudden disappearance of her daughter, Noelle. Determined to uncover what really happened to his sister, the young filmmaker retraces her steps, interviews local residents, and searches tirelessly. And his persistence begins to bear fruit.
Found footage is to horror what autotune is to pop music – like it or not, it’s here to stay, and that’s a good thing. But be warned, for every Future or Charlie XCX there are a thousand Rebecca Blacks. Which is to say, for every Rec or Blair Witch Project, there are a thousand The Devil Inside. Well, this film is something else entirely. Directed by Robbie Banfitch, who brought us the magnificent The Outwaters, Tinsman Road takes its time to establish a routine and a connection with the viewer, and realizes that what makes the format work is the naturalism of the performances, the way mundane moments can be transformed into something truly horrifying. Robbie returns to his family home in New Jersey to try to support his mother and try to unravel the disappearance of his sister, Noelle. Consumed by grief, the mother wanders the house at night, as if possessed herself, and sees signs of her daughter everywhere. It’s a film that demands patience, like (some) good things in life.
