Gala Hernández López does a job of deep empathy in this documentary about a young incel (“involuntary celibate”, a misogynistic online culture that defines itself as unable to develop romantic relationships) and his suicide letter, “America is responsible for my death” .
Gala Hernández López does something extremely courageous, something that I, until now, couldn’t admit. To have empathy for incels (involuntary celibates), an empathy that takes her on a journey to track down Anathematic Anarchist, a declared incel, that posted a suicide letter on reddit. We go through reddit, youtube, and many other places online where the incel community gathers to share their mutual hatred of women, their frustrations with dating apps and their loneliness. As a child I had a huge fear of growing up and having no friends, nobody. I was a lonely child and sometimes I think that a little change in culture could have made me a different person. Nobody is free from what surrounds us and that shapes who we are. I’m glad I found my people, I hope Anathematic Anarchist, wherever he is, has found his. (Rui Mendes)
