A family vacation at a resort where the activities are designed either for the older or the younger, and Ren in her mid-twenties, her desire to be a writer and having just been fired not being able to entertain her. Between keeping secrets, hers and her sister’s, and putting up with parents who are overly happy, but with a sometimes-sharp tongue, this is not your typical story about a trans girl and her relationship with her family.
A twenty-something writer Ren reluctantly joins a family vacation trip. Her parents are extra happy, her sister is an endless party spirit. Ren, who has just been fired, is torn between the precarity of the beginning of adult life and the safety of the family that comes with the price. The secrets are shared between the far from ideal family members in the same way as love: with a gesture, with a smile or through a ritual.
A first feature by a Canadian filmmaker Luis De Filippis continues the explorations of the complex family dynamics of trans characters that she started in her short For Nonna Anna, going way beyond the usual narratives of coming out or transitioning. Made by the predominantly trans crew, Something You Said Last Night tells a story relatable on different levels both to the trans community and to everyone. (Anastasia Lukovnikova)
