Otro Sol

Between fiction and reality lies Alberto Cándia, whose myth according to the film involves the Chilean thief robbing the Cathedral of Cádiz, in Andalucía, in the late 1980s. On the beaches and rivers surrounding the Atacama Desert, the search for this thief is done through the stories the director discovers and the possibilities woven from them. The film’s humour does not mask the colonial connection, through the flow of gold, between Spain and the Chilean lands.

Pinochet, in order to take over the cocaine business during the dictatorship, used torture against common criminals, generating the migration of many, creating the figure of the lanza internacional, chileans who settled in Europe and became professionals and recognised in the art of large-scale robbery.

Otro Sol reconstitutes the myth of Alberto Candía who robbed the cathedral of Cádiz and buried the treasure somewhere in the Atacama desert where his relatives and his mate are still trying to find it. The film takes its form the way they tell their stories and compares it to the judicial archives of the case, following the grammar that links both discourses, between the factual and the metaphorical, the precise and the speculative, seduction and roguery, the film becomes twisted and always seems to be ahead of us, throwing clues and misleading us in equal parts.

A spectre is haunting film, the spectre of Raúl Ruiz, another lanza internacional, who worked with the language, the sense of humour and melancholy of Chileans and their potential for ripping apart cinematic language. (Vanja Milena)
