Growing Up Absurd

Ben Balcom, Julie Niemi

United States
2022, 15'

Tolstoy College was an anarchist education community that operated at the University in Buffalo, from 1969 to 1985. The film shows the space, but above all the unifying principle: a group of people who trust each other, with the intention of working in unison.

The Tolstoy College was an experimental programme built on the anarcho-pacifist beliefs of the Russian writer Lev Tolstoy. An educational experiment that offered courses on subjects as varied as civil disobedience, class struggle or collective organisation and which operated at the University at Buffalo, USA, between 1969 and 1985. This film serenely reveals this romantic and revolutionary gesture that lasted almost 20 years and that sought to design alternative teaching and learning methods, more inclusive, horizontal and collective, outside the institutional straitjacket.
