A Hungarian family of six relocates to Vancouver Island. Jeremy, the eldest brother, is distant and withdrawn, his gaze erratic. Through the eyes of Sasha — the younger sister and a secondary character — Sophy Romvari brings us face to face with the aftershocks of this intimate earthquake. Blue Heron, her feature debut, intertwines the sounds of childhood and the slow aging of memories with the utopia of understanding imposed by adulthood.
Prior to this, her first feature, Sophy Romvari made a film called Still Processing (2020), which explored the trauma that still haunted her family. In Blue Heron, Romvari is still coming to terms with it. This film revolves around an experience whose origins are unsettling and whose consequences are an open wound. Yet, in this film, the director presents us with an approach of piercing beauty. Travelling across more than one timeline, we are confronted with the lives of a mother, a father and their children, in their most tender and most confusing moments. The juxtaposition of the present and the past, of reality and fiction, is a tapestry that Sophy Romvari weaves with care and mastery. We can only applaud this debut for the way it portrays something so personal in such a relatable way.
