In the 60s, Edviges Pisco wrote a diary about her experience as a school teacher in the village of São Brissos, in Alentejo. Inspired by her diaries, the film portrays the present day in the region, where the echoes of the past still resonate.
The alchemy of cinema as a device linking past and present emerges here through the writings of a schoolteacher in an Alentejo village during the 1950s and 60s. A Memoir of Antecipation articulates memory and image in order to interrogate the persistence of gestures, spaces, and living conditions. The intimate observations inscribed in the diary resonate in the present, revealing a subtle continuity: a harsh existence shaped by human geographies and landscapes that seem to resist time. The film suggests a superimposition in which differences dissolve and continuities quietly assert themselves. The first short film by João Sarantopoulos, A Memoir of Antecipation constructs, with remarkable restraint, a possible archaeology of the present.
