Fátima says she doesn’t have any feelings but finds herself dreaming about her new policeman neighbor. Her son Vítor secretly wears that policeman’s uniform, hoping it might bring pleasure to a boy he met online. Grandma Júlia wants to escape her retirement home and run away from her husband, but she doesn’t know where to go. A spiral of insomnia and nocturnal illusions leads to misunderstandings and impossible relationships, all seeking a little air.

It’s an adaptation of a chapter from the book Dialogues with Leuco (1947) by Cesare Pavese, which delves into the myth of Sappho (a poetess of Ancient Greece) and the nymph Britomartis, in connection with the foam of the ocean and the idea of heartbreak-induced death. Avoiding a linear narrative, components such as footnotes or extratextual information are also adapted, giving the film a poetic dimension that transcends the boundaries of the text.

Zinzindurrunkarratz

In this film, the director brings the Japanese technique of kintsugi (using gold tracing to recover fragmented, broken pieces) to the cinema, “piecing together” — with the parsimonious help of sound and a transhuman walk through the Basque landscape — some disparate but very personal elements: Oskar Alegría’s father’s Super-8 camera, two unused film reels and two pieces of footage stored, all intact after 41 years.
