Carnival in the Sahel

Carnival is an event and a festivity where the limits can be transgressed in a context brimming with music, sensations and textures. In this film, it is also a starting point for an approach on the history of black culture and colonialism, with concepts of identity and blackness taking center stage.

Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan

In this film the spotlight is on Shane MacGowan, the leader of the punk Irish band Pogues. MacGowan turned out to be a difficult character to interview, according to the director, but that made room for the film to portray his irreverence and essence, using archival footage and testimonies from people like his sister, Siobhan, his father, Maurice, and Gerry Adams, the former president of the Sinn Féin political party, in inventive and playful ways.

Death in Venice

(In partnership with Lisboa 5L Festival) Visconti makes Thomas Mann’s protagonist, Gustav von Aschenbach, a composer rather than a writer, but the film is a fairly faithful adaptation of the German author’s novella. Aschenbach travels to Venice for health reasons and finds a city struggling with a cholera epidemic. There, he meets Tadzio, a Polish boy, and becomes dazzled by his beauty. Delphine’s prayers

A raw documentary about Delphine, a young Cameroonian woman who is carrying a suffering that has sprouted horns. Rosine Mbakam’s camera keeps its eye on Delphine, without looking away or illustrating what she expresses. Cameroonian-born and Belgium-based, Mbakam and her cinema, which has focused on the migrant experience, explore themes such as the weight and dominance of patriarchal societies over African women and the Western culture’s sexual, colonial exploitation.

Film that takes as a starting point the exhibition Pedro Costa: Company — an exhibition dedicated to the Portuguese filmmaker that could also be seen as a collective, given that he was flanked by artists such as Picasso, Bresson, António Reis, John Ford, Jeff Wall, Godard, Rui Chafes or Charlie Chaplin — to continue to create a dialogue between the Portuguese director and the figures that haunt his imagination.

John Cohen is a maverick and a multi-talent artist. Founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers as well as folk musician raved about by Patti Smith, photographer, anthropologist and filmmaker, Cohen played a singular role in registering figures from American popular culture, such as his portraits of Jack Kerouac, Kooning Willem, Robert Frank, Allen Ginsberg, Woodie Guthrie and a Bob Dylan about to make it into the limelight.

Easter Eggs

Jason and Kevin are two friends with a relationship in dire straits. Jason wants to go parrot hunting in order to sell the birds and buy a bicycle. Kevin wants him to shut up. The search for the birds ends up triggering a confrontation, where tenderness and violence mix.

Echoe of a punch on the bone

A film divided into two moments. First, a dinner provides space for friends to share stories of being an immigrant in Lisbon, ending with Nina regretting her return to her country of origin for a job. Consequently, an unwanted answer to that lament becomes a nightmare.

A Vermelha/ The Red was Vila Franca de Xira, so named by PIDE, during the time of the Estado Novo. This film brings us echoes of a city that contained a multiplicity of places — whether private or institutional houses — used by the antifascist resistance of the era. These, and those responsible for them, are now revisited and interviewed.
