SCREENING WITH Q&A

Last Tropics

The sea is ailing. It is unclear whether this is a recent affliction or the accumulated toll of decades of human exploitation. Three desperate, forgotten fishermen turn to dynamite fishing as their cure. A catastrophe in every sense of the word.

Ivar

In Ivar, the debut film by Norwegian filmmaker Markus Tangre, puppets are placed within a framework of everyday social realism. Anne notices a sudden change in her husband’s scent, and the night turns into a moment of self-questioning.

Three

A country house and a double date. It begins cordially, politely — of course — until alcohol starts laying down its own law, loosening tongues and inhibitions. In its wake come old conflicts between siblings and spouses, tensions, resentments, and the you-never-told-me-this revelations long left unsaid.

Cycle of violence: Puppy Please!

Bunny and the viewer are locked in a relationship; yet the bed of roses, the sensual game, quickly drops its mask, unleashing violence that erupts and repeats itself relentlessly. How is an aggressor made?

I Am The Film Motherfucker, But I Am Real

A found-footage collage emerges from five archives in post–Arab Spring Egypt: an activist in exile, the recruitment of a group of cadets from a military academy, a television series, and other fragments of a generation born of a failed revolution. The film reclaims propaganda — so deeply performative — in which the athletic male body is staged as the ultimate agent of the authoritarian state led by President el-Sisi.
