A French queer musical that puts two aspiring pop (and punk) stars on a collision course. What results is a first love in all its fullness: filled with intensity, anguish, sweetness and volatility. Mimi Madamour (Louiza Aura) and Billie Kohler (Gio Ventura) are stars who have fallen by the charts’ wayside and are now remembered only by their most devoted (if not obsessed) fans. After the success of the short film Les Démons de Dorothy, which garnered the Silver Leopard at Locarno in 2021 and was featured in over a hundred festivals worldwide, Alexis Langlois ventures for the first time into feature films with Queens of Drama, which had its world premiere at Critics’ Week at Cannes.
The film was inspired by a past romantic relationship of Alexis. Like the two protagonists, the queer diva who is also a YouTuber, Mimi Madamour, and a lesbian punk star at the peak of her career, Billie Kohler, Alexis reveals: our relationship was a blend of admiration, rivalry, and class warfare intertwined. We loved each other like crazy, but we couldn’t be together.
From chart-topping hits to emotional meltdowns, Mimi and Billie’s tumultuous relationship shatters dreams of stardom and leads them down a path of self-destruction. Superfans like Steevyshady will immortalize their story and turn them into symbols of a generation. The film’s songs features artists such as Rebeka Warrior, Yelle, Pierre Desprats, Mona Soyoc (KaS Product), and Louise Bsx.
Queens of Drama is a French queer musical — camp, hilarious, chaotic, frenetic, bursting with pop culture references in a celebration of queer culture. Infinite adjectives for a film that simply won’t leave our minds! Warning: the songs will very likely get the audience up from their seats and turn the cinema into a dance floor.
Les Reines du Drame is screened together with the short film The Exploding Girl by Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel. Alexis Langlois will be present for a Q&A with the audience.
