CB4 refers to “cell block 4”, the prison environment that brought together the characters of this mockumentary about a totally fictional rap group, with Chris Rock as the lead, that satirizes without mercy aspects of gangsta rap the way This Is Spinal Tap satirizes the behavior of rock bands and the documentaries that idolized them. The film includes the parodic testimonies of Halle Berry, Eazy-E, Butthole Surfers, Ice-T, Ice Cube and Shaquille O’Neal.
An excellent satirical comedy of early 90’s rap that’s very topical when it comes to incoherent posturing. From the critique of the fake gangster to the fake revolutionary, CB4 is a landmark film to the point that its title has entered the lexicon of Hip Hop culture. Today, if we say that group is CB4, we mean that they are trying to be something they are not, for other purposes. (Sam the Kid)
