5L Programme: Cinema-City

Within the Special Screenings, and in partnership with Lisboa 5L, the Portuguese language and literature festival promoted by the Lisbon City Hall, a special programme is presented again this year which, in this 20th edition, intends to celebrate the multicultural facet of the city’s life.

The Cinema-City cycle invites the public to follow the work of filmmakers who, in various registers, formats and languages, have thematically approached the suburban fringe of different cities. These films work on social urbanism and uprooting, tension and complicity, violence and integration, acculturation and the affirmation of the identity of those who were naturalised on the margins and depart from there to settle in the centre of multiculturalism.

There are 7 films in total: 3 feature films: O Fim do Mundo, by Basil da Cunha, winner of the Best Portuguese Feature Film Award at the 2020 IndieLisboa; La Haine, a French cinema classic about police abuse in the poor neighbourhoods of Paris; and Outros Bairros, a documentary about teenagers of African origin born in Portugal. And 4 short films: the documentaries No’i, by Aline Magrez, and Villeneuve, by Agathe Poche; an animation, Fest, by Nikita Diakur; and the only fiction film selected, Mistida, by Falcão Nhaga, which premiered in the 2022 edition of IndieLisboa.

All the information about these films may be consulted at the section’s page.

IndieLisboa will be at Cinema São Jorge, Culturgest, Cinemateca Portuguesa, Cinema Ideal, Cinema Fernando Lopes and Penha de França Swimming Pool until May 7.
