Il Dono

In 1950, the small Calabrian village of Caulonia still numbered nearly 15,000 souls, but there now remain no more than a few hundred. A phlegmatic old man and a young disabled woman are among the last inhabitants who haunt the deserted village. They seem to be waiting apathetically for their end and resemble the old boat abandoned on the shore. Il Dono is the story of those who have left, told by thosewho have stayed; a tale of disaster and exodus.

Lisboetas

Throughout the 20th century Portugal was a country of emigration. The economy was so week that half of the Portuguese working population was employed abroad – looking for better wages and sending money back home. Some years after the Portuguese integration in the European Community, things have changed…. almost one million of immigrants came to Lisbon in about one decade. Most of them came from eastern European countries with a higher level of education. But there are also Brazilians, Chinese, Indians, Africans… Will they change Lisbon and Portugal (which still is one of the poorest countries in Europe)? Will they be narcotized by the resigned indolence of the country?
