A portrait of the Armenian poet and troubadour Sayat-Nova that is presented as a visual poem, composed of tableaux representing his life. An enigmatic meditation on art that was such a departure from the Soviet realism of its era that the authorities prevented its distribution outside Armenia.

(In partnership with Lisboa 5L Festival) Visconti makes Thomas Mann’s protagonist, Gustav von Aschenbach, a composer rather than a writer, but the film is a fairly faithful adaptation of the German author’s novella. Aschenbach travels to Venice for health reasons and finds a city struggling with a cholera epidemic. There, he meets Tadzio, a Polish boy, and becomes dazzled by his beauty. (In partnership with Lisboa 5L Festival) Truffaut’s first colour film combines the black humour of the French director and the morality of Ray Bradbury’s book, which has already been adapted to cinema several times, specifically because of the way in which the story’s dystopia is portrayed. It’s a world where literature is banned for being the spark that can light the flame of revolution, something that is literally extinguished by dedicated firefighters. (In partnership with Lisboa 5L Festival) An Italian drama based on the homonymous play by Luigi Pirandello. Marcello Mastroianni is the protagonist of the film, a character who is under the illusion, the result of trauma, that he is the Roman Emperor Henry IV. His psychiatrist tries to bring him to the present reality, where the woman who loves him (Claudia Cardinale) awaits. Music by Astor Piazzolla.
