Catatonia

Tiago Rosa-Rosso

Portugal
2020, 22'

A metaphor for the precarious labor conditions experienced by a generation represented through three friends. One of them, surviving on odd jobs to make ends meet, finds Ivo, a friend who seems completely catatonic or sleepwalking. A saga to help him begins.

Tiago Rosa-Rosso brings back a character (and the actor) from one of his first short films, Deus Dará (2013), and uses the same narrative structure of Despedida (2015): three men, one silent, two very talkative. Thus, Catatonia pursues his denunciation of job insecurity and adds to the generational portrait the theatrics and wordplays that have defined his later works. A candid absurdist fable where the “dead weight” of the unemployed in a capitalist society is made literal. (Ricardo Vieira Lisboa)
